Government's Response to Public Inquiry Reports

This website contains content that could be upsetting. If at any point you feel distressed or need support, please speak to a mental health provider, trusted friend, or loved one. Please visit “how to find help” for a list of support services.

We Remember

Together, we honour, remember, reflect, and act.

As government acts on recommendations made by the public inquiries into the Desmond fatality on January 3, 2017 and the mass casualty of April 18-19, 2020, we acknowledge the lives lost and the profound grief that continues to be felt by those most impacted and the affected communities.

We are committed to working towards lasting change and in memory of the lives lost by these two events, as well as everyone who has been impacted by their loss.

How to Find Help

If this is an emergency, or if you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call the Provincial Mental Health and Addictions Crisis Line toll-free at 1-888-429-8167 or call 911. Or go to your nearest hospital or emergency department.

It’s important to get help if you or someone you know needs support for mental health, addiction or wellbeing. Resources, helplines, support groups, websites and counsellors are available to help you.

If you have a pre-existing mental health condition or addiction, it’s important to continue with your treatment. Be aware of new or worsening symptoms and reach out for help and support.

You can also visit the Nova Scotia Health Mental Health and Addictions Program to find mental health and addictions professionals who provide support, programs and services for Nova Scotians across the province.

If you or someone you know is experiencing gender-based violence, you can visit the Gender-Based Violence Resource Portal for tools and information to help deal with violence and abuse in intimate partner relationships.

Approach

The Province is committed to working across government and with community to address recommendations made in recent public inquiries, including the Desmond Fatality Inquiry and the Mass Casualty Commission.

Our response to the recommendations focuses on addressing the causes of violence, breaking down systemic barriers and improving the safety and resilience of communities.

To ensure progress, Government has created a group of Associate Deputy Ministers to track and support implementing the recommendations, and we will continue to engage with community as we move forward with this work.

Through a whole-of-government approach, we are working strategically to advance actions and initiatives that respond to multiple recommendations, where possible and appropriate.
